꿈의 나노 물질, 그래핀

연필심에 사용되어 우리에게 친숙한 흑연은 탄소들이 벌집 모양의 육각형 그물처럼 배열된 평면들이 층으로 쌓여 있는 구조인데, 이 흑연의 한 층을 그래핀(Graphene)이라 부른다.

그래핀은 0.2㎚의 두께로 물리적, 화학적 안정성이 매우 높다. 2004년 영국의 가임(Andre Geim)과 노보셀로프(Konstantin Novoselov) 연구팀이 상온에서 투명테이프를 이용하여 흑연에서 그래핀을 떼어 내는 데 성공하였고, 그 공로로 이들은 2010년 노벨 물리학상을 받았다.

그래핀은 구리보다 100배 이상 전기가 잘 통하고, 반도체로 주로 쓰이는 실리콘보다 100배 이상 전자의 이동성이 빠르다. 강도는 강철보다 200배 이상 강하며, 최고의 열전도성을 자랑하는 다이아몬드보다 2배 이상 열전도성이 높다. 또한, 빛을 대부분 통과시키기 때문에 투명하며 신축성도 매우 뛰어나다.
